What to Bring
In her book, Invitation to Retreat, Ruth Haley Barton describes retreat as a spiritual practice of taking an “extended time apart for the purpose of being with God” and with others. With that in mind, consider limiting any work you may need to do during your free time. You may find it most helpful to leave your laptop at home, although we understand it’s easier said than done!
Planning for the weather & Location
The retreat center has beautiful grounds including a labyrinth and 3 acre garden for walking and resting. Your room will have what you need for your stay, including bedding. All meals will be provided, but you may bring snacks if you wish. Please bring along all toiletries.
Summers in Villa Maria can be hot and humid. The average high for August in Villa Maria is about 82 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the average low is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so you may want to pack a few layers.
The bedrooms and meeting rooms will have air conditioning but you will want to pack for the hot weather! You may also want to bring layers if the air conditioning is cool.
Towels and bedding are provided by the Villa.
Your mat and yoga props. We recommend a blanket, bolster (and/or meditation cushion), blocks and strap. If you are flying, please let us know asap. We are working on bringing extra props for you. If you are driving, can you throw in some extra props to share with those who are flying? Thanks!
An open heart & mind
Here are some things you might wish to bring along for this restful retreat
Yoga Props
Whatever you use for your own practice that can fit in your suitcase! We suggest a mat, 2 blocks, a blanket, and maybe even a bolster, meditation cushion, or stool can help make any practice more comfortable. However, no special equipment will be required.
Journal & Favorite Writing Instruments
There will be opportunities for journaling or creative response, so please bring a journal and pen. Or perhaps treat yourself so some new, brightly colored pencils or gel pens that glide across the page. If writing is not for you, we encourage creative response through drawing, doodling, or even painting if you have the supplies.
Comfortable clothing for movement and rest
We will intersperse yoga practices of varying energy levels throughout the day and evening. We also offer some time for slow walking, so a comfortable pair of walking shoes will come in handy. There is a pool on site, so feel free to bring a swim suit!
A good book
Is there a book you’ve been hoping to get to, but have been too distracted to read? You’ll have opportunities for free time to enjoy your book outside or indoors.
Essential Oil or Salve
We will suggest the use of an essential oil or salve for blessing of the body. Treat yourself to something that smells and feels amazing to you.
